Old Ground

His mother's village. Three days from the dungeon.

The village did not look like the origin of anything.

It sat in a shallow fold of land between two ridges, the kind of place that had always been there and would always be there — too small to matter to anyone with power, too settled to matter to anyone looking for something new. A handful of houses. A well at the centre. Fields running out from the edges of it in every direction, winter-bare now, the soil turned and resting. Smoke from chimneys. The smell of animals and turned earth and breakfast fires still burning.

Azureock stood at the treeline and looked at it for a long time.

Three days they had walked to get here. Three days of forest and cold, Drogar ranging ahead and doubling back, the planet working steadily through what remained of the poison and the damage, closing the gap between the warrior he had been before the dungeon and the warrior he was now. His right hand had returned — not perfectly, the last two fingers still resolving themselves, movement there still slightly wrong — but it was a hand again. That was enough for now.

He had known where Svenid lived. He had known since before the poison had found him — had filed it away the way he filed everything: a location, a name, a face matched to a time and a place. His mother's village. He had come here every couple of years as a child, she and he making the journey together from his father's house while he was still young enough that the world had not yet revealed how long it intended to be. It had been something close to a second home — the roads in, the layout of the houses, the way the light sat on the ridge in the late afternoon. He knew all of it still. What had changed was everything inside that knowledge: the faces were gone, replaced by strangers who carried none of the names he remembered, and most of the houses had been rebuilt at least once in the centuries since. The shape of the place remained. The village it had been existed now only in him.

He turned to Drogar.

The dronger stood behind him at the edge of the trees, watching the village with the particular stillness of an animal that has learned to read the things that trouble the one it follows. His eyes — pale amber, the colour of old honey — moved between Azureock and the scattered houses without urgency but without rest.

"Stay," Azureock said. The helmet carried his voice quietly, pitched for the dronger alone. "Camp. I'll return before dark."

Drogar held his gaze for a moment — not disagreement, but the specific attention of a creature weighing whether this was a situation that warranted overriding six centuries of learned compliance. He decided, as he usually decided, that it was not. He lowered himself into the undergrowth with the practised economy of something that knew how to wait, and in three seconds he was invisible.

Azureock walked down toward the village alone.

He was seen before he cleared the fields.

He always was. The helmet made him what he was at a distance — a black figure, featureless, carrying the particular quality of stillness that came from six centuries of walking toward things that needed walking toward. His HUD registered the response moving through the village ahead of him like a wave: a woman at the well who stopped mid-motion, the bucket suspended. A man in a doorway who stepped back into shadow without turning away. A child who had been running between two houses and simply ceased to run, standing in the path as though the ground had become uncertain.

He walked through it without stopping. He knew where he was going.

The house sat at the far edge of the village where the ground began its slow rise toward the eastern ridge — larger than its neighbours, added to over the decades the way a long life accumulates things, each extension built and fitted carefully into what came before. The door was closed. Azureock stood before it and waited.

He heard movement inside. More than one set of footsteps. A low voice, quickly stilled.

He knocked.

The man who opened the door had aged in the way that happens when centuries of physical work compound into something the body carries permanently. He had been large once — still was, in the architecture of his frame — but something recent had been at him as well, something beyond age, and it showed in the way he occupied the doorway: blocking it, not greeting it. His eyes found the helmet and stayed there with the particular fixedness of a man keeping his face carefully neutral.

"Warrior," Svenid said.

"Svenid." Azureock let the name sit. "May I come in."

Something moved behind Svenid's eyes — a rapid calculation, the kind that happened when every available choice was bad. He stepped back. Azureock came inside.

The house was warm. A fire in the central hearth, pots hung above it, the smell of bread and wood smoke and underneath both of those something medicinal, faint now, the ghost of a remedy recently finished rather than still needed.

A woman stood near the far wall. She had the build of someone who had worked hard for a very long time and had no intention of stopping, and she watched Azureock the way you watch something you have already decided you are not afraid of, which was different from not being afraid. This was Brenne. He knew it without asking.

And there was a girl.

She sat near the fire on a low stool, a blanket across her lap, watching him with the open, unguarded attention of a child who has not yet learned that staring is something people notice. She was perhaps eight or nine, dark-haired, thin in the particular way of someone recently ill and still in the early stages of being well again. Her colour had returned. Her eyes were clear.

She was not afraid of him.

Most children were afraid of him. Most adults were afraid of him. This girl looked at the black helmet with the direct, wondering curiosity of someone encountering something interesting rather than something threatening, and she did not look away.

Azureock looked away first. He turned to Svenid.

"I want to know what happened," he said.

"I don't know what you mean," Svenid said. His voice was even. His hands were not — they had found each other at his sides, the fingers of one pressed against the knuckles of the other in a grip that was doing work.

"You gave me the bottle," Azureock said. "I drank from it. I spent time in a dungeon because of what was in it." He did not raise his voice. He had not raised his voice in a confrontation in longer than Svenid had been alive. "I'm not here for a reckoning. I need to understand what happened."

"I found the bottle on my doorstep," Svenid said. "I thought it was a gift. I didn't know what was in it."

Azureock was quiet for a moment.

He looked at the room. The medicinal smell, fading but present. The girl on the stool, the blanket across her lap. The way Brenne had not moved from her position near the wall, watchful, her weight slightly forward. The grip of Svenid's hands. The particular set of the old farmer's jaw — not defiant, not guilty, but braced, the expression of a man holding a position he has decided to hold regardless of cost.

He looked at the girl again.

Recently ill, his mind said. Recovering.

He looked at Svenid.

"How long was she sick," he said.

The hands tightened. Svenid said nothing.

"The smell," Azureock said. "Remedy-root. You've been burning it for weeks, not days. The blanket on that stool has been slept in — someone sat with her through the nights." He paused. "She started recovering recently. Not long ago." Another pause. "About when I would have arrived at the dungeon."

Svenid's jaw worked. He said nothing.

"I'm not asking you to tell me what you were told not to tell me," Azureock said. "I'm telling you what I already know. I know someone used your family to get to me. I know they had a way to compel you. I know the compulsion ended when their trap was set." He looked at the girl — at the clear eyes and the returning colour. "I know she's better now. I know you're not."

Brenne made a small sound — not a word, just a breath, quickly controlled. Svenid's eyes closed briefly.

The fire popped. The girl on the stool had drawn the blanket up slightly, watching the black-armoured figure with her father with the attentive quiet of a child who understands that the adults in the room are carrying something heavy.

"I didn't want to," Svenid said. His voice had changed — lower, rougher, the evenness gone. "I thought about not doing it. For three days I thought about it."

"I know," Azureock said.

"She's all—" He stopped. Started differently. "I'm old. She's the only—" He stopped again.

"I know," Azureock said.

The room held them both for a moment. Then Azureock asked the question he had actually come for, carefully, the way you ask a question you need the answer to without asking it directly.

"What did he say about me," he said. "The one who came to you. What did he tell you, so you'd know it was me."

Svenid looked up.

"He didn't just describe you," Svenid said, and something shifted in his voice — less guarded, carrying now the residue of something that had unsettled him and not quite stopped unsettling him. "He knew things." He paused, working out how much was telling and how much was simply describing what had disturbed him. "He knew your sword — not just that you carried one, the markings on it, the way it moves. He knew about your companion." A glance toward the door, the treeline beyond it. "He said you'd leave him outside the village because of the fear. He knew that. He knew—" Svenid's brow drew down, remembering. "He said the route you would be taking. Not a general direction. The specific path. The timing. He said three days before the new moon you will pass through the valley below the Ketharn ridge, and he will be alone."

Azureock was still.

"He knew things about you," Svenid said, "that I didn't know. That I couldn't have known. And I've known you since before—" He stopped, and the weight of what he didn't finish was heavier than what he had.

Azureock stood in the warmth of the house and let his mind work.

The Resome had taken him. That he had known since the dungeon. But the Resome had needed precise intelligence to set the trap — his route, his timing, his habits, the specific road he would walk and the specific window he would be vulnerable. That kind of knowledge did not come from an enemy watching from a distance. It came from someone close to the source. Someone who had access to things no enemy should have access to.

Someone had given the Resome that information.

Or someone had assembled it themselves, over time, with patience and purpose — had studied Azureock the way you study something you intend to use.

He said the route you would be taking. Not a general direction. The specific path.

He thought about the mission instructions, dissolved from his pocket as always after reading. He thought about the source of those instructions — the question no warrior asked, the mystery treated as the word of God. He thought about how much someone would need to know about a warrior to predict his route before the mission had even been delivered to him.

He would need to think about this carefully.

He looked at Svenid one last time. The old farmer stood in the middle of his house with the fire behind him and his hands finally still at his sides and the expression of a man who has put down something he has been carrying for weeks and is not yet sure how to stand without the weight of it.

"You have a good house," Azureock said. "She's going to be well."

Svenid's throat moved.

Azureock walked to the door. He stopped once, with his hand on the frame, and looked back — not at Svenid, but at the girl on the stool by the fire. She was still watching him. Still with that same unguarded directness, the blanket pulled up to her chin now, her eyes following him the way children's eyes follow things they find genuinely interesting rather than things they are supposed to find frightening.

"What's her name," he said.

Svenid's wife answered. Her voice was steady and clear, the first words she had spoken since Azureock had entered the house, and she said the name the way mothers say names — not as information, as recognition, the particular way of saying a name that means this one, this exact one, no other.

"Varela," said Brenne.

Azureock held it for a moment. Then he walked back out into the cold.

Drogar came out of the undergrowth before Azureock had reached the treeline, reading his approach the way he had read it for six centuries. He fell into step at Azureock's left side and they walked without stopping into the trees.

Azureock walked and let his mind settle around what it had been given.

The Resome had needed a map of him — not his body but his patterns, his routes, his habits across decades. Someone had made that map. Someone had known which road he would walk before the mission instructions had told him to walk it, which meant the knowledge had not come from watching him respond to a mission. It had come from somewhere upstream of the missions themselves.

That was the thing that mattered. That was the thing to follow.

He thought about what the mage had said to Svenid — the precision of it, the confidence of someone reading from notes rather than guessing. Three days before the new moon you will pass through the valley below the Ketharn ridge. Not he might pass through. Not watch for him. Will.

Someone was very certain about Azureock's movements.

He would need to find out why.

The sun went low and the forest deepened around them and Drogar pressed close at his side, warm and present and asking nothing, and Azureock walked and thought about what it meant when your enemy knew your road before you did.
